Tucked away in the heart of the City of Orange, The Barnhouse Project is more than just a new construction—it’s a blend of history, craftsmanship, and modern efficiency. This brand-new, 800 sq. ft. detached ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) was built from the ground up to complement the original 1950s farmhouse on the property, seamlessly integrating timeless design with today’s high-efficiency features.
A Home with History
The property itself is a well-known city landmark, originally owned by William O. Hart & Family, a name deeply tied to the development of Orange County. The Harts were pioneers in the area, operating The Orange Daily Newspaper and creating Hart Park, the county’s first city park. This legacy of innovation and community impact continues with the addition of The Barnhouse Project—a carefully designed ADU that respects the past while embracing the future.
Design & Build: The Best of Old and New
Chad Compton and his team at Defi Construction took on this ambitious project with a clear vision: blend the charm of a traditional farmhouse with modern sustainability and durability. From foundation to roof, every element of the build was crafted with precision and purpose.
- Modern Farmhouse Aesthetic – Interior & exterior designed to complement the existing historic home.
- Landscaping & Hardscaping – Concrete, pavers, sod, decomposed granite, native succulents, irrigation, and gravel parking areas—plus the use of natural stones from the original property to maintain its authentic feel.
- Sustainable Features – A 4kW solar system with micro-inverters, hi-efficiency LED lighting, tankless water heating, and advanced interior/exterior insulation for energy conservation.
- Fire-Resistant Construction – Hardi-backer board & batten siding, fire-proof eave vents, and a clean-air “Energy Recovery Ventilator” (ERV) fan system to enhance air quality and safety.
- Custom Finishes – A composite roof, custom fencing and gate fabrication, and a hand-crafted landscape design that brings the entire space to life.
