The holidays are all about bright lights and warm celebrations — but let’s keep them safe too!

Don’t overload outlets or power strips.
✔️ Spread lights and décor across multiple circuits.
✔️ Use power strips with surge protection.
✔️ If lights flicker or breakers trip, reduce the load immediately.

Use outdoor-rated lights only outside.
✔️ Look for “UL Listed for Outdoor Use” on the box.
✔️ Outdoor lights and extension cords are designed to withstand moisture.
✔️ Keep plugs off the ground to avoid pooling water.

Check cords for frays, cracks, or exposed wires
✔️ Discard damaged cords — never tape or patch them.
✔️ Replace older light strings that have brittle wiring.
✔️ Inspect plugs to ensure they fit snugly without sparks or looseness.

Unplug decorations before going to bed or leaving home.
✔️ Consider smart plugs or timers to automate shut-offs.
✔️ Heat from bulbs or faulty wiring can ignite if left unattended.
✔️ Remember: “If you’re not there, your lights shouldn’t be either!”

Keep cords away from heat sources.
✔️ Avoid placing cords near heaters, fireplaces, or heat vents.
✔️ Do not run cords under rugs — heat + friction = fire hazard.
✔️ Keep cords visible and out of walkways to prevent tripping.

Bonus Safety Tips:
✔️ Use LED holiday lights — they stay cooler and use less energy.
✔️ Ensure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
✔️ Keep real trees well-watered to prevent fire risk.
✔️ Have a fire extinguisher easily accessible in decorated areas.
