“Sometimes the most impactful projects aren’t the biggest ones—they’re the ones that remind people they’re not alone.”
The Project
At the Building Trades Network, we often say that construction is about more than buildings—it’s about people. This past weekend, BTN members once again came together to prove exactly that through another incredibly meaningful Service Day project.
This time, the mission was personal.
BTN members built a custom handicap access ramp for a 19-year-old young man in Anaheim who was tragically paralyzed in an auto accident just one year ago. Since the accident, his family had been relying on a steep piece of plywood fastened over a short staircase just to help him access the home. The makeshift setup created an extremely dangerous incline—nearly a 40-degree ramp—that made it difficult and unsafe for both the family and emergency personnel to maneuver a wheelchair or medical gurney in and out of the home.
What began as a discovery during another BTN member’s project quickly became something much bigger.
A Community That Steps Up
When the story reached BTN Founder Paul McKelvey and the network members, the response was immediate:
“How can we help?”
Without hesitation, members stepped forward donating:
- Time
- Labor
- Materials
- Equipment
- Funding
- Expertise
Using membership fees, donated materials, and the collective efforts of passionate trades professionals, the team came together to design and construct a safe, functional, and dignified access solution for this young man and his family.
A custom rendering created by BTN Member Chad Compton helped bring the vision to life and guided the build process from concept to completion.
Small Project. Massive Impact.
While this may not have been the largest construction project BTN has completed, it may very well have been one of the most impactful.
Sometimes the greatest transformations aren’t measured in square footage or price tags—they’re measured in quality of life.
For this family, this ramp means:
- Safer daily access
- Easier medical transport
- Improved mobility
- Greater independence
- Peace of mind
And perhaps most importantly, it reminds them that their community cares.
What Makes BTN Different
The Building Trades Network was built on the idea that skilled professionals can accomplish incredible things when they work together with integrity, compassion, and purpose.
Service Day projects like this showcase the true heart behind the network.
BTN members are not only passionate about their trades—they’re passionate about using their gifts and experience to help improve the communities they serve.
This project embodied everything BTN stands for:
✔️ Collaboration
✔️ Craftsmanship
✔️ Community
✔️ Integrity
✔️ Compassion
✔️ Service above self
Building a Better Community Together
Watching contractors, builders, tradespeople, suppliers, and professionals unite for a cause bigger than themselves is always inspiring. Every person involved brought something valuable to the table, and together they created something life-changing.
This ramp is more than wood and hardware.
It’s dignity.
It’s accessibility.
It’s safety.
It’s hope.
And it’s another reminder that the Building Trades Network isn’t just building projects—we’re building a stronger community, one act of service at a time.
