The Domingo Kitchen Remodel is proof that even with challenges—like keeping existing flooring—amazing transformations are possible when BTN Members collaborate.
The Project
When it comes to kitchen remodels, every project is unique—and the Domingo kitchen was no exception. This project beautifully illustrates not only how thoughtful design and problem-solving can completely transform a space, but also how BTN member collaboration ensures homeowners get the best results.
The Homeowner’s Vision
The homeowner loved her recently installed flooring—rich brown tones with gray swirls—so keeping it intact was a must. She wanted to ditch her old white cabinets for something fresh and updated, but still complementary. The solution? Warm gray cabinets with brown undertones, perfectly balancing the floor while avoiding the all-too-common white cabinetry look.
She also wanted to:
- Replace the bathtub-style layout with a more practical shower
- Keep the vanity and flooring intact
- Upgrade her kitchen layout for better function and flow
- Design Challenges & Smart Solutions
- Flooring Patchwork
Saving existing floors always comes with challenges. In this case, there weren’t enough full tiles to replace the cut pieces near the toe kick. The installer skillfully seamed in available pieces, blending them seamlessly into the layout—a detail the client was happy with.
Layout Adjustments
The homeowner originally wanted to relocate the fridge, but for the sake of a functional working triangle, the fridge stayed put, and a pantry was installed instead.
A double oven was removed and replaced with a range and microwave combo, creating more counter space and better flow.
The sink stayed in its angled corner position (a challenging spot!) which required creativity. Because she used RTA (Ready to Assemble) cabinets, the sink base came only with a front panel—no box. The cabinet installer built a custom box, ensuring a proper fit.
Cabinet placement evolved as the installation took shape: a waste bin cabinet fit better than the drawer bank next to the sink, so the drawers were shifted left of the dishwasher. The result? Better function and balance.
Finishing Touches
The backsplash tied everything together. A mini brick glass mosaic picked up both the brown and gray tones, creating a cohesive, stylish flow that complemented the swirl of colors in the flooring.
